Look after yourself when striking out alone

The job market has been depressed for a long while now and, far from getting better, it seems to be getting worse. This is a miserable state of affairs that some brave, resilient souls are turning to their advantage. I’ve come across many people of late who have decided to strike out on their own and set up fractional businesses – lots of marketers, some finance people and a couple of HR contacts.

On the plus side, setting up on your own brings independence, potential for high financial rewards and immense personal satisfaction, however, it demands dedication, long hours and financial risk. You can say goodbye to 9-5 and prepare to make sacrifices in personal time. As well as crystal clarity about your proposition, a solid business plan, market knowledge and financial prudence, you will need to develop your ability to cope with uncertainty and considerable resilience to protect your mental health.

Entrepreneurs are said to have a high tolerance for stress, however, our economy is leading those who are not natural entrepreneurs to strike out alone. If this is you, keep one eye on all aspects of your life, not just work: relationships, health and fitness, peace of mind. If you identify that you need support in any of those areas, go for it. Consider help in the form of therapy, meditation, massage, sleep advice, a coach, a PT, a sounding board – and don’t be afraid to ask for it. Setting up in business can be a lonely affair – nip it in the bud before you reach the low point.

One of the best things about working for yourself is that your business is based around you, so you have the freedom to do everything according to your own values. Evidence tells us that when our work is aligned with our core values, we get less stressed. If you’re less stressed, you’ll enjoy your work more, if you’re happy in your work, it’s contagious and your clients or customers will pick up the vibe. Good luck in your new venture!

Taking time out to keep some balance in your life

Meditate, go for a walk, do some yoga, use a coach, go for a run…there are many ways to maintain balance and to keep yourself healthy when the business is stressful.
